This shit in Haiti is breaking my heart on an hourly basis. I was in tears tonight watching the Nightly News. It's almost too much to bear. The massive death toll, the people still trapped, the dead bodies having to be moved by bulldozers, the fact that people waited in line today for SIX HOURS for ONE bottle of water, the moving hospital that is averaging 70+ amputations a day, mothers lying over their children's lifeless bodies. I feel so powerless.
Which is why I feel like I have got to do something. I know donating to the cause of my choice is helpful. But I want to do more. I want to be there. I think I can't possibly feel like I'm helping enough unless I'm there grabbing supplies and handing them out and seeing/touching people. That is one of the things I look forward to when I become a nurse - that I really could go and provide real, medical help to people in need.
In the meantime, I've been thinking about what I can do from Glendale Street to help. Monetary donations, collect supplies at my home and drop them off at the Red Cross, bake sale/garage sale to raise more money?
